Hikvision vs Dahua: choosing a video intercom in Melbourne
Both are reliable, both are cheap, and the difference matters less than the install. Here is what actually decides it — starting with the cameras you already own.
This is the question we get most after "how much", and the honest answer rarely involves the brand.
Start with what you already own
If your house already has Hikvision cameras or an NVR, use Hikvision. If it has Dahua, use Dahua. Not because one is better, but because mixing means two apps, two accounts and two sets of firmware on the same wall.
That single rule settles most jobs.
What actually differs
**Image quality:** both are excellent at this price point. Dahua often gives a slightly wider angle for the same money; Hikvision is often a touch better in very low light. In a Melbourne hallway, nobody can tell.
**The app:** Hik-Connect is more capable and more cluttered. DMSS is simpler, which matters if elderly parents or a cleaner need to use it.
**Apartment systems:** both have strong multi-unit ranges. Which one your building already uses usually decides it.
**Price:** near enough to identical that it should never be the deciding factor.
What matters much more than the brand
- **Where the door station goes.** Shade, height, and out of arm's reach. A camera at 1.6m gets a face; at 1.1m it gets a hat.
- **How the lock is wired.** An electric strike needs a specific power arrangement. This is where cheap installs fail six months later.
- **The network.** PoE is one cable for power and video; retrofit without PoE means a local supply at the door, which is a different job.
- **The handover.** Who sets up the app, names the devices, and shows the family how to answer? If the answer is "you will figure it out", you will not.
The gate question
If you have a sliding gate, the intercom needs a dry-contact relay into the gate motor. Almost every motor supports it. What people underestimate is the cable run from the house to the gate — that is usually the expensive part, not the hardware.
Our honest position
We install both. If you have neither and no preference, we quote both and let you choose. What we will not do is talk you into replacing a working Hikvision system with Dahua because we happen to have stock.
If someone tells you the brand is the important decision, they are selling hardware. The install is the decision.
